He first became interested in dentistry around the age of 15 after watching his uncle, who worked in construction, undergo extensive dental reconstruction following a job-related injury. His uncle was so impressed with the results of his dental treatment that his enthusiasm became contagious, inspiring him to pursue dentistry from that point forward. He later became the first person in his family to become a doctor.

While much of his extended family worked in construction, his parents were jazz musicians, and his maternal grandparents were classical musicians in Scandinavia. Although he could have pursued music professionally, he chose the more dependable path of dentistry and has never regretted that decision. He continues to play the piano and finds that it influences his work in subtle but meaningful ways. To him, a dental procedure is much like a musical composition, it requires practice, focus, and performance. He believes that the better his piano playing becomes, the better his performance in dental procedures, and he finds the connection between music and dentistry endlessly fascinating.
